Race 12/12 – Silver Springs

After the storms of the last two races we came into the final round a little weary. We didn’t expect the dry sunny conditions that greeted us, though we welcomed them. They allowed for some good riding and great race action in all 3 groups, as Motorato Ware put her stamp on the championship with her 5th win of the season.

Motorato and Mistina Vavoom of OMG Magazine came out first in qualifying and set the pace for what would be a very competitive session. Moto secured pole with a time of 22.083. Mistina was also in good form with a 23.260 that would lead to gate 4. Silk Bamboo and Thorn Blackflag of the Red Wings came out next, showing once again what they are made of by securing gate 2 for Silk and gate 6 for Thorn. This meant both the two top point-scoring teams managed to get both their riders in the final. This was going to be a fight to the finish. Bike Racer of Stilman Motors was back on form this week with a 22.996 time for gate 3. And Asher Coronet, an independent, had a solid run for his first motoSL race to secure gate 5. The scene was all set for a great race.

We had a clean start to the race with Moto leading the way off the line, until things became a little tight on the back half forcing Moto to go off track. When the field came to the gate after 1 lap it was Silk in the lead, with Asher and Mistina right behind. It stayed like that for a few laps while Moto worked back up the field. On lap 4 Silk made a slip, allowing Asher to take the lead in his very first race. Lap 5 saw Motorato take her second spill. It looked like Moto’s chances for the podium were gone. The crowd gasped when Asher crashed on lap 6 after leading the way. Silk took advantage and regained the lead.

Silk ran a bunch of fast 23 second laps to hold the lead, but Moto was clipping time each lap, closing the gap. Could Silk hold for the win? Lap 13 saw Motorato less then a 10th behind Silk when they came into traffic. A cloud of dust came up around the next bend meaning someone was down. It was Bike Racer, with a bad high-side sending his bike flipping down the track. Silk was unable to avoid the 350-lb speed bump and that was all it took for Moto to get by with a nice gap and two laps to go. When the bikes came across the line for the final time this season it was Motorato Ware of OMG Magazine for the win, Silk in second and Mistina with the final podium spot. Thorn had a strong finish for 4th, the elusive podium remaining out of his reach this season. Bike Racer took 5th for another strong finish and Asher took 6th in his first race.

The middle race was full of action. Mara Kohl had a good start but Matt Kraken of Saints on Sunday took the lead on the second lap and ran consistent laps for the win, with Shane Poindexter and Gianluca Mahoney right behind on the final lap.

The third group ran an exciting race, changing race leader often. Abacus Mimistrobell of RD Racing held the lead on the lap that counts for the win.
